What Does A Multiverse Mean?

If infinity is accepted in science and mathematics then maybe infinite potential needs to be accepted too. If the potential is infinite then can we dismiss anything lightly? The intellectual and scientific realization that there could be multiple universes has progressed from speculative metaphysics and science fiction, through to serious theoretical cosmology, through to data-rich observational cosmology, and finally through to majority-accepted conventional wisdom.
